What Should You Do If Your Dishwasher Leaves Dishes Dirty?

Save

A dirty dishwasher load is usually a loading, water, or maintenance problem, not a broken machine. Here are 10 practical fixes to get your dishes clean again.

Quick answer

5 steps — read this before anything else

  1. 1

Scrape food off dishes but do not pre-rinse everything, and load them so spray arms can reach every surface.

  2. 2

Check that the spray arms spin freely and that nothing blocks them.

  3. 3

Clean the filter, door gasket, and spray arm holes.

  4. 4

Run a hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar on an empty machine.

  5. 5

Use fresh detergent and a rinse aid, and check that the water is actually hot.

Warning

Before reaching into a dishwasher, switch off the power at the breaker. Never put your hands near the bottom while the machine is running or if water is standing, and never mix cleaning chemicals such as bleach and vinegar, which can release dangerous fumes.

If your dishwasher is leaving food, film, or grit on dishes, the machine is often working fine and something in the setup or maintenance is off. Work through the ten checks below in order. Most people fix the problem within the first three.

What is happening

Dishwashers rely on four things: hot water, good detergent, unobstructed spray, and a clean filter system. When any one of these fails, dishes come out dirty even though the cycle runs normally.

Step by step: 10 ways to improve cleaning

  1. Stop pre-rinsing everything. Modern detergents need food residue to work. Scrape off large pieces and let the detergent do its job. Rinsing dishes spotless can actually leave them dirtier because the detergent has nothing to bind to.
  2. Load correctly. Face dirty surfaces toward the center spray. Do not nest bowls or overlap plates. Put large items on the sides and back so they do not block the spray arms.
  3. Check the spray arms. Spin them by hand. If they do not turn freely, remove whatever is blocking them. Use a toothpick to clear food from the holes.
  4. Clean the filter. Most dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom. Twist it out, rinse it under hot water, and scrub it with a soft brush. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of dirty dishes.
  5. Wipe the door gasket. Food and grime build up along the rubber seal and can redeposit on dishes. Wipe it with a damp cloth.
  6. Run a cleaning cycle. With the machine empty, use a dishwasher cleaner or place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a hot cycle. This removes grease and mineral buildup.
  7. Use fresh detergent. Old or clumpy detergent loses power. Store it dry and replace it if it has been sitting for many months.
  8. Add rinse aid. Rinse aid helps water sheet off and prevents spots and film. Refill the dispenser regularly.
  9. Confirm hot water. Run the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting the dishwasher. Most machines need water around 120 F (49 C) to dissolve detergent properly.
  10. Choose the right cycle. Use a heavy or pots-and-pans cycle for greasy loads. Short or eco cycles may not be enough for baked-on food.

What NOT to do

  • Do not overload the machine. Crowded dishes block water and spray.
  • Do not put dishes in with the dirty side facing away from the spray.
  • Do not mix silver, cast iron, or wooden items with a normal load if the manufacturer advises against it.
  • Do not ignore a standing pool of water at the bottom, which points to a drain or filter problem.

When to call a professional

Call a qualified appliance technician if dishes are still dirty after all ten steps, if the machine does not fill or drain, if you see standing water, if the spray arms do not spin at all, or if you notice a burning smell or leaking. These suggest a mechanical or electrical fault that is not a cleaning issue.

How to prevent it

Clean the filter monthly, wipe the gasket weekly, run a cleaning cycle every one to three months, and keep detergent and rinse aid topped up. Load consistently and check the spray arms every few loads. These habits keep performance steady and extend the life of the machine.

Start with steps 1 through 4 today. If the next load still comes out dirty, move on to the cleaning cycle and water temperature checks, and call a technician if nothing changes.
