Home fire escape

Save

In a fire, getting out fast matters more than anything. Never go back inside.

This is a preparation aid, not a substitute for emergency services. In a life-threatening situation, call your local emergency number first.

All done. You are prepared.

If you smell smoke or the alarm sounds

  • Alert everyone in the home immediately
  • Feel the door with the back of your hand before opening it
  • Stay low under smoke and cover your nose and mouth

Getting out

  • Use the nearest safe exit; do not stop for belongings
  • Close doors behind you if it slows the fire without delaying you
  • Use the stairs, never the lift

Once outside

  • Call your local emergency number from a safe place
  • Go to your agreed meeting point and count everyone
  • Tell the fire service if someone is still inside
  • Never re-enter the building
